Project Background

Back to Overview

A Telecommunications Task Force, commissioned by the Governor of Georgia, recommended that high end technology and innovation in telecommunications were the purview of research universities.

Following these recommendations, the Board of Regents (BOR) Chancellor directed University Presidents to seek innovative and cost effective solutions.

Georgia Tech responded by:

  • Completing an assessment of our current infrastructure

  • Surveying campus units

  • Forming a Steering Committee

  • Forming alliances with key Georgia Tech business units and the Georgia Technology Authority (GTA)

  • Completing a business case

  • Reaching a key decision and obtaining executive support to replace the current Centrex system with a new state-of-the art system

  • Releasing a Request for Proposal (RFP) ( June 30, 2005 )

  • Conducting site visits for interested vendors ( July 18-22, 2005 )

  • Holding a pre-proposal conference for vendors ( August 1, 2005 )

  • Establishing a deadline of September 2, 2005 deadline for vendor proposals

  • Selecting BellSouth as the vendor in early 2006 and beginning the installation of the new system
