The next step in OIT’s layered approach to security will require working with Georgia Tech departments to identify, classify, and protect the sensitive data stored on Institute computers at every level. OIT, like most IT organizations, has procedures in place to ensure timely, accurate backups for files on both its critical and non-critical servers. These include backups of users’ files stored on the Prism fileservers and Spectrum mailstore machines, as well as Institute information systems. The OIT backup utility, called pfdump, provides for files to be restored from tape to disk, thus providing the ability to recover from system disk failures and other hardware problems affecting users’ files.
