  • No food, drink, or tobacco products of any kind are allowed in the lab spaces.
  • Users shall conduct themselves in a manner conducive to a work environment. Individuals who are disruptive or rude to other users will be asked to leave.
  • OIT/ET reserves the right to ask users playing games to leave if there are other users waiting to use the computers for scholastic work.
  • The phone in each lab is for the use of the User Assistant. The User Assistant may grant phone use to users on a limited basis. Use of the phone for paging is prohibited.

User Identification

  • A valid Georgia Tech ID card is required to use the labs.
    • For students, this is a Student ID Card ("Buzz Card"). If you do not have a Buzz Card, you can get one from the Buzz Card office in the Bookstore Mall, next to the Student Center.
    • For staff and faculty members, this can be a Buzz Card, Staff ID Card (issued by Human Resources) or official department badge (OIT ID Badge, GTRI ID Badge, etc.).
  • Users who bring guests, may not use a separate computer for the guest.
  • During reservation periods, the professor or teaching assistant conducting the reservation may vouch for students without ID. At all other times, proper ID must be shown to enter.
  • A valid PRISM user account and password is required to log into workstations. Student, faculty and staff members may obtain an account by going to the Customer Support Center, Rich 140.

Printers and Printing

  • Print jobs should be limited to 20 pages. Larger jobs should be sent to the central-ps printer. Documents longer than 20 pages will not be accepted by the printer.
  • Multiple copies are not allowed and will be confiscated if discovered by the User Assistant.
  • Manual feeding of special paper or transparencies is not allowed. If you need these services, please visit Printing and Copying Services or a commercial printing store, such as Kinko's or Franklin's.
  • The paper supplied in the OIT labs is for use in the lab printers only, and not for any other printers in the building.
  • Never attempt to reload used paper back into the printers, even completely blank pages. Old uncollected printouts should be placed in the nearest recycling bin.

Class Reservations

  • A representative of the group making a reservation must be present during the reservation (in the case of a class related reservation, this must be the professor or his teaching assistant.) If a representative does not appear by fifteen minutes after the scheduled time, the reservation will be considered cancelled, and the lab will be opened for general usage.
  • Reservations may only be made for the times that the lab is open. The Student Center lab may not be reserved for any purpose.
  • Because of limited space, vacant seats will be made available to other users. The representative can ask the User Assistant on duty to remove any user who is disturbing the class.
  • Labs can only be reserved for actual instruction time involving the use of the lab computers. Labs may not be reserved as an alternative lecture location or for the completion of homework.
  • The representative is responsible for making sure that the lab room is returned to its original state at the end of the reservation session. This includes cleaning any whiteboards used.
  • Reservations are made on a first come, first served basis. Reservation requests should be submitted at least five working days before the first session. Cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Special software or files required for a class must be submitted at least five working days in advance of the first session where they are required. Supplied software will be removed from the lab shortly after the last session of the reservation.

Software Usage, Copying, and Installation

  • Official Software Installation by OIT Lab Support Staff
    • OIT has been funded to supply a limited set of software products that includes those recommended by the Student Computer Ownership committee. If you wish to have specialized software installed in a lab, proof of purchase must be provided.
    • OIT User Assistants are trained in the usage of the software that is provided by OIT but can only give limited assistance for user-supplied software.
    • Most software is licensed on a per machine basis. Therefore, you must provide as many licensed copies as you wish to be able to use concurrently at any one time. Unless otherwise stipulated by the license agreement, we can spread the licenses across more than one lab.
    • To request the loading of a piece of software, you must fill out the online Software Request Form and submit it.
    • OIT reserves the right to refuse installation of any program that might compromise the integrity of the lab computers or server, that may interfere with regular use of the lab computers.
    • OIT will not install any software package for the express purpose of redistributing it to users, regardless of the legality of such redistribution.
  • Software Copying
    • Users may not download software installed on the lab machines for use elsewhere. Users may use the lab machines to download legitimate software packages from other sites (e.g. Netscape Navigator from Netscape's web site.)
