Passwords

Password Information

OIT recommends that you change your GT Account password every 30 days. You will be forced to change your password periodically. If you do not change your password when asked, it will expire and you will not be able to log in. If you create hints for your password, you can choose a new password without knowing the current one, even after it has expired. When choosing a password, there are a few restrictions you should be aware of.

  • Passwords are case sensitive.
  • Passwords must contain between 7 and 23 characters.
  • Passwords must contain more than one character class (letters, numbers, symbols). For example, "password" will not work because it contains only letters.
  • You cannot reuse any of your most recent passwords.

In addition to these restrictions, there are a few guidelines you must follow in order to be in compliance with Georgia Tech's Computer and Network Usage and Security Policy (PDF).

  • Do not write your password down.
  • Do not share your password with anyone. Not your secretary, not your parents... not even OIT.
  • Avoid using people's names (especially your own), your GT Account username, and any word that can be found in a dictionary.

Manage Your Password

Manage your GT Account and GT Active Directory passwords on the Web at http://passport.gatech.edu/.

Password Resets

If you have forgotten your GT Account password and have not created password hints, the OIT Support Center can reset it for you. There are several ways to get your password reset.

  1. Appear in the OIT Support Center with a photo ID.
  2. Call the OIT Support Center at 404-894-7173 (Hours: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, EST)
  3. Have the Computer Support Representative (CSR) in your department or school contact the OIT Support Center on your behalf.

NOTE: Password information and resets are not processed by e-mail.
