Usenet newsgroups are widely used for reading and posting messages on specific topics. The Georgia Tech Usenet newsgroup service is available to GT Account holders. OIT manages the campus newsgroup service, and creates newsgroups for classroom or official institutional purposes. The campus newsgroup service does not include alt.* groups because they take up too much disk space and are (deliberately) not governed by any policies or procedures. How to Read NewsgroupsTo subscribe to and read newsgroups, select a newsreader program that works on your computer's operating system, or a mail client or web browser with a built-in newsreader. There are many newsreaders available for free for UNIX/Linux, Mac OS, and Windows users. For example, UNIX users can read news with Pine, and PC users can read news with Outlook Express, a mail client with a built-in newsreader. The news server name to configure in your newsreader is news.gatech.edu. NOTE: OIT does not support the Outlook Express application, but you can get configuration help from OIT Customer Support Center. Creating NewsgroupsOIT creates newsgroups for the Georgia Tech community. To request a newsgroup for a class or other official use, contact the OIT Customer Support Center. Newsgroups for non-institutional purposes require a petition of 10 verifiable Georgia Tech e-mail addresses, to assure there is minimal interest in the newsgroup's existence. More Information |
