John K. Mullin John Mullin is the Chief Information Officer of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Associate Vice President and Associate Vice Provost for Information Technology. He brings to this role over 30 years of information technology experience in higher education, private sector, and government environments. In this capacity, he is responsible for developing and executing the strategies to leverage the power of advanced technologies in advancement of the academic, research, and administrative goals of the Institute. Prior to assuming his CIO role in 2001, John served Georgia Tech in several roles. John joined Georgia Tech in 1994 as one of the lead IT members who designed and built the Institute’s technology foundation in preparation for hosting the 1996 Olympic Village and competitions on the campus. During the years of 1994 to 1996, he formed the IT Planning and Program Office, adding IT program management expertise to the already well-established technical expertise in the Office of Information Technology (OIT). This team added a missing ingredient and was pivotal in the success of several complex initiatives, including the development and deployment of our enterprise systems and the massive re-build of the campus network infrastructure. As a result, the Georgia Tech community enjoys one of the finest networks in higher education that set the benchmark for subsequent successful ventures with Internet2, National LambdaRail, and other educational technologies. John was a founding member of the Southern Crossroads (SoX), the gigapop that placed Georgia Tech in the mainstream of research networking access in the Southeast region. He continues to work with the CIOs from the University of Georgia and Georgia State University in an executive management role for SoX. In 1998, John was appointed Executive Director of OIT while also serving as Director of Operations and Engineering. In this critical role, he provided strategic leadership for the continued technological advancement of computational and network services and initiatives that resulted in the delivery of innovative instructional and educational technologies. In a collaborative effort, he worked with industry leaders to develop and deliver a robust and competitive supercomputing and research environment. During his tenure at Georgia Tech, John has served on numerous committees and advisory boards with the Georgia Technology Authority, the University System of Georgia, EDUCAUSE, Net@Edu and private industry. The focus of his efforts has ranged from strategic planning in the IT environment to the exploration of innovative telecommunications and information technology. During his private sector affiliation, John specialized in directing large systems integration initiatives such as the consolidation of complex computing systems for the U. S. Department of Defense as well as innovative electronic benefits systems for state governments. Throughout his 22-year career with the U. S. Air Force, John held a variety of positions within the information technology arena. As director of a major network program office, he was responsible for the deployment of high bandwidth fiber and copper networks at military installations across the country. Prior to this, he served in senior officer roles in networking operations, systems programming, and flight applications development groups. John is a member of the Southeastern Universities Research Association, the University Consortium for Advanced Internet Development, the Association for Telecommunication Professionals in Higher Education, and EDUCAUSE.
