Academic and Research Technologies (ART)-David Leonard |

ART, in collaboration with institutional and industrial technology development groups, is tasked with creating and maintaining the large scale technology architecture on the Georgia Tech Campus, facilitating campus and external partnerships and pilots consistent with the future development of Georgia Tech's architectural concepts and principles, and partnering in the pursuit of funding for projects in education technologies, networking, high performance computing, video, and security. Take a look at ART's organizational structure. Network TeamThe Network Backbone team is a critical part of the ART Directorate in the OIT. Focused on the design, implementation, and operation of the Georgia Tech network, the team installs over 5000 ethernet ports per year. The Network Team also provides services such as Internet2 access, access and connection to ResNet and EastNet, and Georgia Tech intranet access. Engineering TeamThe Engineering team is available to assist departments with physical network designs as well as any additions, moves, changes, and repairs that may be necessary. This includes fiber and copper cabling as well as wireless networking. Besides these support and design roles, the team also evaluates new technologies within its areas of expertise, and plans for their implementation and deployment on the campus. Academic and Research SupportAudio/Video Classroom DesignThe Audio/Video Classroom Design team is involved in outfitting the technology enhanced classrooms around campus that OIT supports. It takes a specialized understanding of the equipment and how it should serve the class to design the classes appropriately. The team strives to keep the classrooms equipped with the latest technological enhancements. Digital Media InitiativesThe DMI team supports a collection of multimedia services supporting the Georgia Tech community. Leveraging the Universal Storage and Backup initiative, DMI offers a robust streaming service supporting all major multimedia formats (Quicktime, Real, Windows, and Flash). Limited storage is available for any GT unit in need of streaming video with dedicated storage available through USB for those in need of more space. Additionally, services are available for relaying of live video streams via Quicktime, Real and Windows encoding applications. DMI also supports the Digital Classroom Recording System (DCRS) project in use in numerous classrooms and facilities on campus. DCRS is an application that is installed on a user supplied PC that enables automated capture of any audio/video source connected to the PC. DCRS automatically uploads the captured content into our central video repository. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)HCI is a user-centered design approach recently integrated into OIT projects. The OIT HCI specialist uses this approach by understanding the audience through assessing their needs, developing design criteria based on those needs, and assisting in the development phases of a project. The goal is the successful integration of technologies, based on the user's perspective, into useful applications. High Performance Computing (HPC)The High Performance Computing (HPC) effort provides support to faculty and students in accessing and using the high performance systems provided by OIT. Research Network Operations Center (RNOC)The Research Network Operations Center (RNOC) is a research program working in the areas of measurement, management, security and controls of networks, network services, computational resources and enterprise systems. |
