Who would use this service?
Departmental IT staff who need large, enterprise class storage that cannot afford and/or do not wish to maintain their own storage.
Purchasing enterprise quality storage is rarely a cheap endeavor. Powering, cooling, operating, and maintaining that storage is not cheap either. OIT, in support of campus initiatives such as Peoplesoft, Banner, T-Square, email, streaming media, and GTED has no choice but to operate large arrays of highly reliable storage duplicated across multiple data centers. OIT is willing and able to provide departments with file-based (NFS and/or CIFS) or block based (iSCSI) storage using the infrastructure that has already been purchased and pressed into service. By sharing the costs of this infrastructure (racks, NAS heads, replication licenses, maintenance/warranty uplifts) with multiple departments, more of Georgia Tech can realize the benefits of enterprise quality storage at a reduced cost to everyone. OIT does not want to become a cost center at this time, so charges for floor space, power, cooling, and system administrator time is not included in the current cost of $0.90/GiB/year.
