Overview

The Office of Information Technology provides SSL certificates signed by a locally maintained root certificate. OIT does not provide commercial certificate services such as Verisign, Thawte, Geotrust. If you require a certificate from a published certificate authority (one that exists within the browsers or other applications by default) then you should contact your desired vendor directly.

As a general recommendation, GT signed certificates are best utilized on:

  • Services that have a small supportable user group (as generally the GT Root is not installed and you will need to provide some assistance to your users)
  • Services that are not accessed from a wide variety of machines where the user has little or no administrative control on (such as central mail services where a customer might access them from an internet cafe).

The Georgia Tech Server Certificate Root can be obtained by visiting:

http://ca.gatech.edu

If you access GT web services that utilize the Georgia Tech Server Certificate Root, you will need to install the root into your browsers. Other software (such as e-mail software) may require the assistance of the server administrator.
